I am separated from my husband, can I legally change the locks on our jointly owned home?
I am currently separated from my husband. Can I legally change the locks on the home that we jointly own to prevent him access in my absence?
You can change the locks but you can't prevent him from gaining access to the property if he is a joint owner. Therefore if he broke in he would not be committing any offence.
You should contact him and inform him that you would prefer him to let you know when he intends to visit the property and for what reason. If he makes a nuisance of himself when he does come, you may have grounds for an injunction which would have the effect of preventing him from coming into the house.
