My husband and I are separating and I have just found out that he has loads of debts. Will I be liable for any of these debts?
My husband and I are separating but he has loads of debts which I have just become aware of, including utility bills that have not been paid. Will I be liable for any of these debts if he should just take off as he has threatened to do? We have two small children as well.
You will both be liable for any debts in your joint names and you will each be liable for any debts in your sole name. However you need to seek urgent legal advice regarding your situation so that you can sort the financial aspects of the separation out as soon as possible in order to provide security for yourself and your children.
We can refer you to a firm of solicitors that offer a fixed fee divorce and financial service, in the first instance they can call you and discuss the service further on a no obligation basis and without charge. Please e-mail if you would like us to make this referral.
